Step 2: Fragrance Load

Wax melts usually run a stronger fragrance load than candles — 8–10% is a common starting point. Check your wax's maximum load before pouring hotter than that.

How the math works

Count × what one mould holds

A batch of melts is just how many clamshells or moulds you are filling, times what one of them holds. If you already know that weight, type it in. If you only know the mould — six cavities, a certain size — enter the cavity count and the weight one cavity holds, and the calculator adds it up. Not sure what a cavity holds? Load is measured against the wax

Same rule as the Fragrance Load Calculator: the load is a share of the wax, not of the whole melt, the way suppliers state their maximum loads. The total is split so wax and oil together fill the mould exactly — wax = total ÷ (1 + load), oil is the rest.

Melts have no wick to feed

A melt only has to smell good on a warmer, so makers usually push the fragrance load higher than they would in a candle — but your wax’s maximum load is still the ceiling, and a load that leaves the melt sweating oil is too high. Weigh the oil, never spoon it, and note the load that worked so the next batch matches.
